About Album

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1, was written in 1795 and dedicated to Joseph Haydn. Tovey wrote, Sir Hubert Parry has aptly compared the opening of with that of the finale of Mozart's G minor symphony to show how much closer Beethoven's texture is. The slow movement. well illustrates the rare cases in which Beethoven imitates Mozart to the detriment of his own proper richness of tone and thought, while the finale in its central episode brings a misapplied and. In this 1954 recording, Friedrich Gulda performs the third movement of Beethoven's first piano sonata, Op. Friedrich Gulda. 0 out of 5 stars 8. Beethoven: Moonlight sonata Virtuoso series Audio CD. Vladimir Ashkenazy. Beethoven dedicated this sonata to composer Joseph Haydn. A typical performance of it lasts from 16 to 20 minutes. The first movement begins with a bouncy theme that hints at seriousness but remains rather bright and energetic. It must be noted that it seems to have been lifted from the finale of the Mozart Symphony No. 40, whose main theme only differs significantly in its key of G minor. The ensuing Adagio derives its main theme from the slow movement of Beethoven's Piano Quartet, No. 3, WoO. The melody is serenely joyful in its pristine Classicism, and while it is rather simple and direct, it is also effective in capturing a mood of ecstasy and bliss. Friedrich Gulda recorded the complete piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven three times, first in 1954 for Austrian Radio which is released in this mono set by Orfeo, then for a second time between 1954 and 1958 for Decca, and last in 1967 for Amadeo the third was subsequently reissued by Brilliant. The extraordinary achievement of recording these sets in such rapid succession inspires awe and invites comparisons, which Gulda would not have minded, for he was aware that different recordings offer various insights and appeal to listeners for many valid reasons. In Beethoven his mercurial imagination led to quite a lot of fast, staccato playing that feels impatient to me, although as the enthusiastic reviewers state, his style can be delightful in the early sonatas. He reaches his peak in this early cycle with the Pathetique, Hunt, and Tempest sonatas. I enjoyed his slow first movement in the Moonlight, but slow with Gulda doesn't necessarily mean more romantic - there's not much of that in him.
