About Album

Combining the first two singles ever released by the band, Village Fire: Five Offerings From James is an unrefined, acoustic-based, dustup of wide-eyed folk-pop, which will surprise fans expecting either the anthemic James of Sit Down or even the hushed one of Five-O. The debut solo effort from the Klaxons co-founder, The Performer sees James Righton distilling the neon dance-rock of his flagship band into a mostly tasty hybrid of velvety Todd Rundgren-meets Bryan Ferry retro-pop and California-kissed '70s soft rock with neo-psych underpinnings. More in line with Righton's 2017's outing under the Shock Machine moniker, The Performer, despite its affectations, feels like a more authentic rendering of Righton as a songwriter. It touches on the suave art-lounge of Roxy Music, the jangly grooves of . the sumptuous psychedelia of latter day Beach Boys, and the songwriting gift of Nick Lowe. In short, it uses classic elements as the groundwork for something which feels a natural fit for 2019. Those influences permeate the albums title track and lead single. Seems a bit of an odd fit to list this under compilations when it's a 12" EP that happens to bundle the first two releases into one. Personally, I'd catalogue this as a standalone single.

James positively charged out of the gate with this record, a compilation of their first two singles. The band's style at this point is a folk/new wave hybrid that is absolutely bursting at the seams with energy. The songs are short, sharp, inventive, and uniquely idiosyncratic but appealingly catchy. It still sounds fresh today. One of my all time favorite debuts.
